Short summary
Skiing lessons for the youngest children
Parents often wonder when is the best time to start learning to ski – is there a specific age limit? Instructors and specialists suggest that these winter sports should be proposed to a child who already has fairly well-developed motor coordination and is aware of their body. Many novice skiers can be discouraged by failures, too technically complex equipment, especially if they start too early.
It all depends on the character of the child, their level of development and abilities. It is said that a child at the age of 3-5 can start learning to ski, but it is way safer to wait until the age of 5-6. Children at such age dominate in ski schools. Then there is the question of who should teach the child – a parent who has been skiing for years and with whom they feel safe, or a ski instructor?
Each person makes a decision in line with their personal preference, but at the very beginning we advise you to take advantage of the instructor’s knowledge and experience. This provides many benefits that we may only realise after time. First of all, in the event of a fall, the instructor will react faster, knowing exactly how to behave – even in an emergency situation. If it’s the first time a child is skiing, their reaction may vary greatly – the instructor will certainly serve as a role model and build a sense of security. Alongside, they will teach the child the correct technique, sometimes give them an original idea when they're not doing particularly well during the lesson. Attending a ski course also often involves receiving a medal and diploma. Even the most discouraged child will eagerly take up learning with the vision of receiving an awesome medal and impressing their parents.
As parents, you certainly care about your child’s safety, so at the very beginning you should take them to the so-called ‘bunny hill’ or enrol them in a ski school. It’s very unlikely anyone will consider it a good idea to take a child on a skiing trip right away. The exception is travelling to a slope that offers trails appropriate for our skills and a bunny hill; children should be provided the guidance of an instructor. In this case, the child can easily spend up to 1–2 hours learning a new sport while we are relishing active leisure with family or friends.

First ski trip – children’s winter clothing
The first ski trip is always quite an experience! That’s where first falls, minor successes and often the desire to impress one’s parents or friends happen. However, there is no great fun without professional attire! This mainly concerns the safety and comfort of a child who is exposed to many negative factors, both related to the weather and the dangers on the slopes, that we recently wrote about. If a school-aged child is starting to learn to ski, they will certainly focus on a trendy look. So how do we balance our little one’s needs and dress them appropriately for their first trip?

While hitting the slopes, it’s wearing layers that counts. If you are an avid skier yourself, you certainly take care of the right layers. The basis is comfortable and breathable seamless underwear, which will not cause chafing and will effectively wick away sweat. Its special texture is pleasant-to-touch and does not restrict movement. The second layer is designed to keep your child warm. A girls’ fleece jacket will also be a great choice. It can be unzipped, have an extra hood and convenient pockets. This type of clothing will keep your child warm yet not cause the young body to overheat. The final, outer layer is a children’s ski jacket and matching trousers.
Second – keep it professional – ski jackets and ski trousers
The outer layer is the most important, as it protects the child’s body from adverse external factors such as snow, other precipitation, low temperatures or wind, also leading to hypothermia. Girls’ and boys’ ski jackets must have a membrane that will provide breathability and protect against moisture. Its rating reflects the scope of protection – the higher the rating, the better the protection. Falls in the snow will not cause clothes to soak, and the child will feel comfortable for a long time. Boys’ and girls’ ski jackets should also be waterproofed to reduce moisture absorption. Parents and children will be pleased with the extensive adjustment system – look at the cuffs and the bottom part – in our store you can find styles that will literally grow with the child. If the child likes to have small items with them, choose a model with multiple pockets.
Girls’ and boys’ ski trousers have similar features to jackets, except that they’re adjusted by zippers, Velcro and press-studs. Adjustable legs are perfect for keeping snow from getting into the inner layers of clothing and work perfectly on the slope. Boys’ and girls’ ski trousers should also be equipped with reinforced panels to protect against damage, shaped knees and additional pockets, such as those for a skipass and other essentials.
Third, don’t forget the accessories
While hitting the slopes, professional, technologically advanced clothing is not enough to care for a child’s health and safety. In addition to a jacket, trousers and other pieces of a layered outfit, a warm child’s hat or a balaclava to protect a larger area of the face will be indispensable. Kids’ ski helmet is mandatory. Anyway, given the risk of frequent falls due to inadequate skills and inattention of others, we have to care for our little one. Comfort and safety are also influenced by children’s ski gloves, which will cushion a fall on the hands, allow the kid to support their body while learning to ski and keep them warm by limiting moisture penetration. Younger children will feel most comfortable in mittens, while older kids will feel most comfortable in regular gloves.
Ski goggles are also important, and they must fit the size of the youngest skiers. They will protect the child’s sensitive vision, which can suffer not only during falls, but also from snow reflecting the sun’s rays or precipitation obstructing visibility. We have already covered the selection of appropriate goggles, so we encourage you to thoroughly read our article. What else should you remember about when your child is about to hit the slopes? Remember about children’s ski socks that promote breathability, reduce foot perspiration and provide incredible comfort while skiing. Sometimes a scarf will also come in handy, especially if the weather took a turn for the worse.
Fourth – the details are important
When your child is about to take their first ski trip, you should take extra care to protect their skin. Creams that protect against the negative effects of low temperatures and weather conditions come in handy. It’s also a good idea to pack a hand warmer for your little one, in case they get so cold after hours of riding to need such a gadget.

Is the equipment necessary?
While the right ski outfit for children is essential, purchasing the entire equipment for a beginner skier should be carefully considered. First of all, we have no guarantee that the child will come to love skiing – even if it’s our greatest passion, for our child it may be nothing more than just one of the extracurricular activities that does not enthuse them. Secondly, as every parent knows, children grow fast! The equipment bought for this season may turn out to be too small next year. Even if the child does not grow out of it, it is not uncommon for kids to improve their skills so quickly that it will be necessary to replace the equipment. It’s worth considering whether you want to spend so much money. Alternatively, there are equipment rental shops, which we can usually use while on the slopes. Of course, no one forbids you to buy your own equipment, but this is certainly not an economical solution. If you are not sure what kind of skis your child should use to learn to ski, it is worth consulting an instructor.
